I was eleven years old when I fell in love with the ocean. I was visiting Cat Island in the Bahamas and my mother could not get me out of the water. With my snorkel gear on and my head in the water I had discovered a new underwater sanctuary, filled with mysterious creatures that I could watch for hours. Now, twenty years later, I’m still connected to that wonderful and strange blue world. As a marine scientist I’ve developed a deep understanding of the ocean’s wealth and beauty. During my graduate studies, at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, I discovered my passion for conservation and coastal fishing communities. It is my goal to get to know and inspire these communities so that they can continue to sustain themselves and future generations with the resources they so heavily rely on.
I currently work as a research assistant at the Waitt Institute in Washington DC. Our work involves supporting Caribbean islands in developing and establishing sustainable coastal policy. This work is based on science, supports coastal and fishing livelihoods, deeply involves and encourages stakeholder participation, and includes the creation of sanctuary zones in order to replenish fish populations and restore ecosystems. Forming relationships and networks of people is critical to our efforts.
