Distance running provides a common analogy for labor, and also represents a literal challenge to accessing healthcare for women in remote and rural locations. I plan to run a half marathon in Steamboat Springs, CO in June 2017 in an effort to support maternal health by fundraising for the non-profit organization Every Mother Counts (EMC).
I support EMC because I witnessed their work in 2015 while traveling in Nepal and volunteered at one of their current grant-recipient sites in Bangladesh. I appreciate that EMC also supports programs within the United States that serve women in low resource communities.
In Nepal, EMC is providing much-needed supplies and sources of electricity that are still scarce after the devestating earthquake on April 25th, 2015. They are also supporting One Heart Worldwide in their efforts to train skilled birth attendants to serve rural communities.
In Bangladesh, EMC is helping the HOPE Foundation for Women and Children in their efforts to provide routine prenatal care as well as train local midwives.
Please join me in supporting this organization's mission to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother.
