Building upon the success of last Season’s original musical adaptation of The Turn of the Screw (which received 3 Helen Hayes nominations!) and this Season’s critically-acclaimed Monsters of the Villa Diodati, our dynamic creative team Matt Conner and Stephen Gregory Smith are deeply engaged in the next “Bold New Work” musical, Kaleidoscope.
Kaleidoscope will take us on a journey through the life of a legendary Broadway performer as she premieres her come back one-woman show. Her performance takes on a new dimension as we learn that she is experiencing the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Conner and Smith are tackling this sensitive subject with pathos, humor and insight and we feel sure that this will be another musical gem. Kaleidoscope will premiere at Creative Cauldron May 4th – 28th.
Creating these world premieres stretches our budget beyond the usual costs of a production, costs that cannot be recouped through ticket sales alone. In addition to our writers, we also hire a music supervisor and orchestrator, and cover costs for a workshop reading of the work. We also try to hire exceptional professional actors and musicians to perform it. And that’s where you come in…
Your donation today will help us fund BOTH the Kaleidoscope project and also an original cast album recording of Monsters of the Villa Diodati. Remember that amazing music? The Washington Post raved “introspective powerful ballads” and DC Theatre scene praised how the “mix of rock riffs and operatic timbre overlay melodic numbers with seismic emotional cores to powerful effect.”
Together our Monsters album and Kaleidoscope project will cost approximately $50,000.
We have already received $11,081 in donations, plus an Angel Donor has committed $5,000. Ticket sales will cover about $20,000 and that will leave us just $14,000 to go!
Can you help us today with a gift? As a “Bold New Works” Donor of $35 or more you will receive your very own copy of the Monsters Album! Donate $50 or more and you’ll also receive an invitation to the Workshop Reading of Kaleidoscope in January 2017.

Creative Cauldron’s “Bold New Works for Intimate Stages” initiative was launched for three reasons.
First, we wanted to produce interesting, engaging, and fresh new musical work that could light up the cauldron. Second, we wanted to give our amazing creative team Matt Conner and Stephen Gregory Smith an opportunity to grow and develop a body of work. Finally, we wanted to be able to share this work with a larger audience by making our productions available for licensing. We have applied for grants to fund this final initiative and believe we will receive funding soon to do so!
That’s why your “Bold New Works” donation is so important. It’s a gift that will keep on giving!
Creative Cauldron will begin directly licensing its critically acclaimed original musicals and plays for both professional and amateur productions. A website to promote “Bold New Works” will be created, along with rehearsal materials like scripts and scores. Royalties will be set at a modest percentage of gross receipts (10% or less) for small theaters with limited budgets, just like the Cauldron, making these amazing productions available to a wider audience!
When other productions are mounted around the country (and perhaps the world!) a portion of revenue from those productions will come back to our artists and Creative Cauldron.
You are part of an exciting new chapter at Creative Cauldron and your gift today lets us know that we are on the right track!
