As we all know, Nepal experienced a devastating earthquake in April 2015 that destroyed the country structurally and economically. Like many people around the globe, I wondered how I could help the thousands of Nepalese who are still displaced or recovering and rebuilding from this disaster. I decided the best way to help was to organize this fundraiser.
GIVING TO THE EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
I have chosen to donate the funds, on behalf of all donors, to individuals and organizations who I know are directly on the ground helping to rebuild the affected villages, areas and schools, and ensuring the safety of the children, especially during this time of chaos. These charities are Shikshya Foundation and the World Newah Organization(WNO)--for their commitment to delivering 100% of the funds directly to earthquake relief efforts in Nepal. The Shikshya Foundation also provides funds to their partners (Pushpa Basnet of The Butterfly Home and Binod Shahi of The Snow Yak Project), who both focus on the welfare and education of Nepalese children.
In 2006, I entered a competition to win a trip to anywhere in the world. I chose Nepal and explained why in a proposal. I always had an affinity for this country tucked away in the Himalayas, especially for the thousands of vulnerable children in the country's remote villages who lack access to education and often fall prey to human traffickers. My goal was to bring hope to the children in these villages. I would do so by giving them the most basic tools of paper and pencil that would help them discover their potential, their special gift, whether through art or writing.
THE STORY OF KALU'S GIFT
As part of my proposal, I wrote a children's book, titled Kalu's Gift, which tells the story of a young Nepalese boy in a remote mountain village who had a special gift of creativity. He discovers another gift as he befriends trekkers walking through his village. It’s a simple but heart-warming story about giving and creating, and one worth sharing with any child or another reminder for our inner creative child as well. I didn't win the competition and shelved the book since I had no intention of publishing it. Until now.
Kalu’s Gift is 6 inches x 6 inches, color and 18 pages. I will give an e-book version as a thank you to all my donors. I would like to provide a printed copy too if I can meet the minimum quantity, which will run the book costs at $6-7 for printing and shipping. This amount will be deducted from the donation. If I do not meet the minimum quantity, I will donate 100% of the funds raised regardless.
So please help me raise funds for the earthquake victims and for Nepalese children. Whether or not I am able to print the book, I hope you will enjoy (and definitely share with the children in your life) the story of Kalu's Gift. Namaste.
