BENEFITING: Wish of a Lifetime
Counting sheep is a common remedy for insomnia. For one 97 year old Navajo woman named Sue being surrounded by hundreds of sheep would be a waking dream. Throughout most of Sue’s life she herded 500-1,000 sheep each day on her reservation. Sadly, Sue had to sell the majority of her sheep when her husband passed away in 1974. Her Wish of a Lifetime is to spend a day recreating the memories of her time on the ranch with her family. The Kansas State Gerontology Club wants to help make that wish a reality for Sue.
Some might say this mother of 16 children has been surrounded by a herd of children during her lifetime too. However, only nine of her kids remain alive today and those losses have been profoundly difficult for Sue. When asked about the hardest obstacle she’s faced Sue responded, “Losing any one of my children. It never leaves you. You just appreciate what you have now.”
Sue wants to stay active, but has had a hard time doing so since moving from her home to assisted living in March 2015. Sue loves sheep because they make her feel young again. “Sheep uplift my spirit, it puts a feeling of joy in my heart” Sue says, “Like when you hear that song (star spangled banner), that's how I feel when I see sheep.”
Sue believes it’s important for everyone to have a dream. “(This wish) will inspire others to always hold a dream in their heart. If it comes true that is great. If not, holding on to it is still inspiring” she says.
Wish of a Lifetime is excited that the Kansas State Gerontology Club is raising funds to help grant Sue’s wish on May 31, 2016. Sue will not only get to spend time with her favorite animal, but also relive happy childhood memories while creating new memories with her family.
