Opera involves music, theatre, movement, dance, and visual arts! It powerfully connects classroom subjects including language arts, social studies, and foreign language. Opera also provides a forum for critical thinking and artistic and cultural literacy.
LETTER FROM THE KIDS OPERA & ART POSSE
For the second year in a row, the Kids Opera & Art Posse is doing our Annual Ring Cycle Endurance Walk on August 24, 2014 around Chastain Park to raise money for the Met Opera HD Live in Schools program.
Opera is a wonderful thing and it is sad that not many people have the chance to experience it. We want to raise money for the HD Live in Schools Program so that the kids can go and experience opera. It is important that kids go because when the seniors pass, there won’t be a lot of people left to see and support the opera. The opera companies will be out of business and opera will slowly fade away.
We think opera is for anyone who wants to see it. Operas can be funny, sad, romantic, historical, classic, or dramatic. We believe anyone who likes seeing Broadway musicals and plays, anyone who loves singing, history, or language might like it without even knowing it. Operas are easier to like than most people think.
We love the MET because they put on five star opera productions. They are visually beautiful, touching, and hard to ignore. We believe the MET produces the most wonderful opera productions in the world- the sets and costumes that they make, and the singers they choose, the chorus, conductors and musicians- they make sure every little detail is absolutely perfect!
MET Opera Live in HD Broadcasts have been important to us because we don’t live in NYC. The movie theater broadcasts all of the operas in the HD season so that instead of taking a plane up to NYC to see an opera, we can just have our moms drive us to our local movie theater and watch the operas there. We like our local movie theater because they don’t just serve popcorn. They serve good food so that we can actually sit back, relax and enjoy the opera. We like seeing the operas in the movie theaters because you can see backstage and hear interviews with the singers, conductors and set designers, and it is fun to hear where the singers are from- their accents, and how they relate to the characters they are playing. We also love to see the previews for the upcoming season.
It would mean a lot to us if you could sponsor us however you can. Last year, we raised $5,137. This year, we hope to raise $10,000. If you could forward our link to friends and family through email and social media, we have a great chance of reaching and possibly going over our goal. The Met really appreciates your donations and so do the kids in school who get to come and have the wonderful experience of seeing an opera live.
Thank you so much for reading this and sponsoring us.

We are also posting the Met Opera Summer HD Broadcast dates, and the HD Broadcast Dates for the 2014-2015 Opera Season. Maybe you can give opera a try!
In the summer, we recommend Rigoletto if you like Broadway because it is set in Las Vegas and is really colorful and upbeat. We also really like The Enchanted Island because it is a Baroque opera, and the music is by Handel, Vivaldi and Rameau.
In the Fall, we recommend The Marriage of Figaro because we love Mozart, or we recommend Carmen because this is one of our favorite operas of all time!
