Kara's Journey To BEAT Breast Cancer
Organized by: CK C
Kara's Update 7/29/2016
July 29, 2016
** Kara and her family have set a realistic goal amount based upon financials that were presented to her by their insurance company and doctors. However, please note that at the end of Kara's journey, any money raised beyond what she will need for medical bills will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. You can check them out here: http://www.bcrfcure.org
On Wednesday, July 6, 2016 Kara was diagnosed with what was thought to be stage 2 breast cancer but now doctors are saying it's bordering stage 3. This is due to the fast pace that the cancer cells are moving and have spread to her lymph nodes. As of now, doctors are unsure if it has spread outside the known areas. Time is of the utmost importance and she is waiting on approval from her insurance company to schedule an MRI, full body scan and bone density test. These are very important to her final diagnosis and treatment and ability to meet with an oncologist.
Her current treatment recommendation is 4-6 months of aggressive chemotherapy which her doctors would like see begin in 10 days from 7/16/2016. After chemo ends she will wait 2 months for a double mastectomy with reconstruction. These treatments are recommended if the MRI and scans come back showing no sign of movement passed the known areas. If it has moved further, then treatment will be more intense.
As many of you know, she resides far from her family and many friends and everybody has been asking what they can do to help. Many feel helpless as miles separate them from her. The thought behind this fundraiser is that it will be a good way for those who can't physically be by her side, show their support. Medical costs for her treatments, medications and surgery are high and there will be many changes in her home that come with a cost outside their normal everyday living expenses.
Over the next year, Kara and her husband would like to keep things as normal as possible for their two young children. Friends in NC have been so gracious in offering to help watch their kids when needed and provide meals as well, but once school begins and everybody gets busier, they know that might prove more difficult. Kara and her husband will continue to do as much as they can on their own, but understand that there are going to be days, weeks and months they need outside help. This will include possible transportation to and from school as well as extracurricular activities/sports for their children. They will need possible nanny/daycare provider, cleaning service for their home, grocery shopping, meals and specific foods Kara needs that are only found at speciality stores 45 minutes from their home. Keeping to her special diet is crucial to her treatment in order to slow down and maybe even stop the cancer cell turnover. These are just a few examples of costs incurred during her fight, but there are many, many more that most people cannot even imagine.
Unfortunately, cancer has become so common that I'm sure cancer it has affected many of you on some level and you can relate to her story. Kara and her family have a long fight ahead and need the love and support of family and friends as they face this head on.
