THE STORY:

Hello Family and Friends,
As you all know, 2 years ago my husband and I were blessed with our son Kaden. From the moment we learned of his existence, our lives instantly became more exciting, meaningful and busy. Then when he arrived, we were both changed forever.
What you may not know, is how our journey has been vastly different, from what we both expected. I struggled greatly with Postpartum Depression and Anxiety after Kaden was born. Through this, I learned a lot about Postpartum Mental Disorders (PMD). I learned the facts about what they are and how to get help if you are struggling with them.
It's hard to talk about PMD. It can be intimidating and embarrassing for a struggling mother to seek help. Unfortunately, a large percentage of women who suffer, don't seek help at all.
Because of my experience, I chose to participate in Climb Out Of The Darkness 2015, for Postpartum Progress. Now, in 2016, I am again participating in The Climb because I want to spread awareness for PMD and encourage women to get the help and support they need.
As Kaden approaches his second birthday, I am reflecting on my own journey with postpartum depression and how different life was for me two years ago. It's not easy to talk about. It was a difficult time in my life. But I have overcome a lot and I believe that I can take my experiences and use them to help others. I want mothers, and mothers-to-be, to understand that if they struggle with PMD, it is not their fault and help is available.

Sincerely,
Kara

Postpartum Progress’ Climb Out of the Darkness® is the world’s largest event raising awareness of maternal mental illnesses like postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety & OCD, postpartum PTSD, postpartum psychosis, bipolar/peripartum onset, and pregnancy depression and anxiety. Climb Out of the Darkness is held on or near the longest day of the year annually to help shine the most light on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. The event features mothers and others across the globe joining together to climb mountains and hike trails to represent their symbolic rise out of the darkness of maternal mental illness and into the light of hope and recovery.  We can’t wait for Climb Out of the Darkness 2016, to be held Saturday, June 18th. Mark your calendars! Help us shine the light of hope with our words and our advocacy efforts so that our fellow mothers will receive better information and better treatment, and their new families will get off to the healthy and strong start they deserve.
