BENEFITING: The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
I (Kareem O'Brien) am participating in the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon on November 2, 2014 as a member of Team Life Without Lupus. Not only will I be training like crazy for my run, but more importantly, I'm going to leverage all my training and hard work to help raise funds for the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation.
LUPUS-- is a chronic, autoimune disorder that affects 1.5 million Americans. It's more common than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis and sickle-cell anemia combined. Yet it remains one of our country's least recognized major diseases. In lupus, the body's immune system can attack healthy organs or tissues, such as kidneys, lungs, heart, brain, skin, joints and blood.
All of my efforts leading up to and during this event are in honor of my big brother (Malik) and his wife (Tara). Malik has been living with lupus for over 22 years now. Through out his time living with lupus he has suffered from skin problems, kidney complications, and joint troubles. He has also had a couple of seizures and comas. As a result from taking the many and various medicines used to battle lupus daily he has also had to have both of his hips replaced.
Tara just recently married to my brother last June 2013 was unfortunately diagnosed with lupus several (about 3-4) months prior to getting married. As of today she has not experienced any of the difficulties my brother has had to endure. Hopefully it will stay that way.
I'm reaching out to everyone I know to help me raise $3,000 for this cause. Any amount you can give is greatly appreciated.
Funds raised for the 2014 TCS NYC Marathon will support the Foundation's mission to advance novel research, increase awareness and expand patient services, while bringing hope for a "Life without Lupus."
Thanks so much for your support.
