After working for 2 years as the co-founder of another non-profit, I stepped away, and began Kusewera. My passion for keeping kids active and my love for the children in Malawi keeps me creating new ways to empower them! My hope is that they will have the courage to grow as positive individuals and become strong leaders in their community. I am fully invested in Kusewera and manage the events we do, as well as being the Director of the Kusewera Empowerment Program.
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the KUSEWERA EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM! I started Kusewera because I know the incredible impact that active & creative PLAY can have on young lives around the globe. Malawi, Africa is one of the poorest countries in the world. Most people live on the equivalent of $1.50 a day. HIV/AIDS, malaria and famine have wiped out hundreds of thousands of people, leaving many children to fend for themselves.
At Kusewera we work hand in hand with Mtendere Village Orphanage in Malawi to support and educate the children of the village and the people of the surrounding communities through yearly volunteer trips. The Kusewera Empowerment Program uses sports, music, creative writing and art to teach the children invaluable life skills such as leadership, sportsmanship, creativity and discipline, as well as encouraging these kids to dream for a better future. Your support makes all the difference!
EMERGENCY NEED: In Malawi, the word for pregnancy is Wapakati which means 50/50. It is understandable why they have chosen such a word when you learn that one in 36 women in Malawi die from pregnancy related complications. That means that one in 36 wives, mothers, and daughters are dying from largely preventable causes. Malawi also has the 11th highest infant mortality rate in the world. Because the mortality rate is so high, the villages are in desperate need of baby formula. With funds raised from the Kusewera Empowerment Program we will be transporting much needed supplies to Blessings Hospital in Malawi at the end of May.
Check out Kusewera's project goals for 2012!
