EVENT DATE: Nov 04, 2012
When I was 14 years old, I started running. I started running because I had a crush on a boy who used to run near my house every day. It was my chance to catch an extra glimpse of him outside of school and to hear him say "hello" as he ran by me in the opposite direction. I still remember my first "run". It was awful!!! I was exhausted and sore. But I was hooked and 36 years later, I still run 40 - 50 miles a week, year round, no matter what the weather.
In all those years of running, I never ran a marathon, never had a desire to as I just enjoyed running when I wanted, where I wanted for as long as I wanted. So many times people have asked me "what's the point with all that training?" and I would reply "there really is no point other than I love it and I run because I can".
Not really sure what inspired me, although my approach to many things has changed in the past year or so. But I have decided to run the NYC Marathon this November and am really excited about it. My family and I have long personal ties to NYC and it seems only fitting this would be where I run my first marathon.
Once my mind was made up, I decided I wanted to join a team to help support a cause. With nearly 200 registered teams, there are so many worthy of my support and fund raising efforts. Being a breast cancer survivor myself, it seemed only right that I join a team that raises funds to support breast cancer awareness and research. That is how I came to apply to and was accepted to join "Team Baldwin". Team Baldwin is a team that represents the non-profit Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, Inc, an organization that raises funds to support breast cancer research, awareness and early detection. It is directly affiliated with the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center at Stony Brook University Hospital and Medical Center in Long Island. It is organizations such as this that help find treatments and someday, a cure for a breast cancer.
In return for my marathon entry, I am obligated to raise a minimum of $3,000 but have set a personal fund raising goal of $5,000. Every single one of you knows someone who has had breast cancer, is currently undergoing treatment or is yet to be diagnosed with the disease. My hope is that you will make a donation to help fight this disease and in return, I will carry with me a small memory of every person touched by the disease, every step of the 26.2 miles I will run.
Your tax deductible donations can be made in any of the following ways:
- A check made out to the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund - mailed to Karen T. Vidoli 425 Maple Street Lee, MA 01238
- A cash donation which I will combine with others into a check made out to the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund
- Through my fund raising web site at http://www.crowdrise.com/karentripodesvidolinycmarathon
I offer a heartfelt and sincere thank you for your support!
