BENEFITING: GALLANTFEW

EVENT: Run Ranger Run IV

Karl Monger

THE STORY:

I've made it my mission to help veterans benefit from my own experiences transitioning - both good and bad - in order they can transition to civilian lives full of purpose and hope.

Over twenty years ago when I decided to leave active duty, I had the HR director of a very large company look at my resume and say "hmmm, Army officer.  You military veterans are really good at following orders and doing what you're told, but here at XYZ Industries we need people who have initiative, think outside the box and don't need constant supervision".

The situation is slightly better now due to all the publicity surrounding veterans issues and the gratitude of a grateful nation to help veterans - but immense challenges remain.

Veterans whose transition doesn't go smoothly tend to isolate.  When they isolate, they carry their problems internally and often self-medicate with alcohol.  They may have delays with the VA providing them the care they need.  They may have employment problems, which leads to financial problems, which when combined with alcohol makes matters worse.  Frustration, increasing sense of failure, anger, loss of self-confidence and more alcohol can lead to loss of relationships.  This leads to loss of a sense of purpose, that the best thing one has ever done is now history.  In a worst case scenario this may lead to suicide.

GallantFew seeks to prevent these issues by keeping veterans connected, eyeball to eyeball with another veteran just like him or her, in the same hometown, with shared military experiences and alignment along civilian interest/profession.  This growing network helps veterans every day accelerate into lives of purpose and hope - but we also spend a huge amount of time and resources in putting out fires - helping veterans who are financially devastated, addicted to drugs and alcohol, who are suffering the pain of lost love.

Your participation - by spreading the word, by helping financially - ensures we can expand prevention and continue providing emergency assistance.  Thank you so much for your support.  km

Now here's RRRIV!:

Run Ranger Run IV(4)

Teams of up to ten individuals pledge to walk, run and/or ride bicycles a combined total of 565 miles in the month of February.  They will raise funds for GallantFew and increase awareness for stated veteran issues.

Veterans continue to battle record high levels of unemployment, under-employment,  homelessness and suicide.  The most recent Department of Labor Statistics from july 2015 show Global War on Terror veterans are 37% more likely to be unemployed than a person who never served and two times as more likely to be unemployed than a Desert Storm era Vetran.  The VA reports twenty two veterans take their own lives daily, and active duty suicides have averaged one per day. We can and do make a difference!

Concept

In 2012, 3rd Ranger Battalion veteran US Army Corporal Cory Smith, having deployed to combat twice, experienced having friends killed and wounded and with his own marriage failing decided to highlight the difficult journey home many soldiers have leaving the Army by undergoing a very public and very difficult journey home himself.  Cory decided to run 565 miles in 28 days with holding his daughter Elleigh in his arms the end goal of his run.

As a Result

To honor Cory’s incredible effort and to continue the momentum to raise awareness for veterans issues – particularly around divorce, unemployment, homelessness and suicide – we are offering an annual Run Ranger Run event.

The Event
