I want to run in the Chevron Houston Marathon as a fundraising runner. I have signed up as a charity runner "Raising Money For ALS Association Texas Chapter". My father, Retired LtCol Edward W. DeBusk, lost his fight against ALS in 2009. I run for funds to fight against ALS for my father! This horrible disease took a man, that was Superman in my eyes, and left him without the ability to walk, sit up, or even eat. I will run each step, each mile, and each race to help find a cure!
I have run 2 marathons (well mini, ultras!! HAHA) and have run several half marathons. I would love to run for others to help with their fight! I would like to start a program for anyone bound to a wheel chair that can't participate in a run, so that they could! I would be willing to push them in a half marathon and work my way up to a full marathon. I would definately need support with creating a structure or chair that could hold any size person, that would be safe and easy for my to maneuver or steer while pushing in a race!!
After my heart stopped 3 years ago and my husband performed CPR to safe me, I had a pacemaker implanted and felt sorry for myself, like I was half dead. I decided to quit feeling sorry and push the limits! I wasn't half dead! I was given an opportunity to live fully. So I started running further than my norm! First with half marathons, then full! I also was blessed to be able to push an angel in a race and absolutely loved being able to give that experience to her! That's when I decided I wanted to run for a reason!!
I have included information about ALS below:
About ALS Association Texas Chapter: ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that usually attacks both upper and lower motor neurons and causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. Yankees first baseman, Lou Gehrig first brought national and international attention to the disease in 1939 when he abruptly retired from baseball after being diagnosed with ALS. The financial cost to families of persons with ALS is exceedingly high. It is estimated that in the advanced stages, care can cost an average of $200,000 a year. As the only not-for-profit voluntary health agency dedicated solely to the fight against ALS, we direct the largest privately-funded research enterprise engaged to uncover the mystery of a disease that affects as many as 30,000 annually. With more than 5,600 people diagnosed each year - an average of 15 new cases each day - our mission is urgent. Every 90 minutes, an American dies of ALS and time isn't on the side of those afflicted. Please consider joining our team in the fight against this horrible disease, and together we can make a difference! Thank you for your support!
