My name is Karrie and I'm 33 years old. The end of April 2014 I was 17 weeks pregnant with my third child when I found a lump on my left breast while taking a shower. After several tests I was diagnosed at 19 weeks pregnant with Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma estrogen rich, progesterone rich, her2 positive. The first doctors ( breast surgeon, oncologist and OB) all suggested that I terminate the pregnancy in order to properly treat my cancer. The next few days are the hardest days of my life. Do I terminate my pregnancy in order to increase my chances of survival or do I take the chance on the possibility of leaving three small children without a mother. Then out of the blue I was contacted by Moffitt Cancer Center for a second opinion. Never did I imagine that I would have met such an amazing team of doctors that were not only willing to treat my cancer but also wanted me to continue my pregnancy. So they laid out my treatment plan. On June 9th I had a Modified Radical Mastectomy (included two tumors over 3 centimeters and Metastatic Carcinoma in 4 out of 13 lymph nodes). On July 3rd I started my chemo with Adriamycin and Cytoxan. We stopped my chemo the beginning of September and at 37 weeks pregnant I delivered a healthy baby girl. One week later they restarted my chemo with Taxol and Herceptin. I went in for my last treatment of Taxol a week before Christmas and unfortunately l left the Dr's with the diagnosis of lymphedema in my left arm. So I will now be starting treatment for my lymphedema multiple times a week and the end of January I will start receiving radiation streatments 5 days a week for 7 weeks. I will also be receiving another 9 months of Herceptin treatment and I will eventually be put on hormone meds for the next 10 years. Then in about 12 months I can start looking at my options for reconstruction surgery.
The last 9 months has been a crazy roller coaster of ups and downs from being diagnosed with cancer, having to give up my business and Brian being laid off to have a beautiful healthy baby girl and realizing how many people love and support me and my family. I realize that there is a long road ahead but with the support of my children Alexis (6) Jaxson (2) and Sophia (2 months) along with Brian my fiance and all of our family and friend we will all be stronger in the end.
