BENEFITING: GLEASONS GIVE A KID A DREAM
EVENT: FIGHTERS 4 LIFE IX
EVENT DATE: May 10, 2017
DAY TO GO
Soulful. Fiery. Adventurous.
Combine those three words and you've got me. I'm a lacto-ovo pescetarian southpaw who is a lover, and is always on the go. In other words; I don't eat meat but like fish, I like to punch things, and am always working on bettering myself and the lives of others.
After 28 years on this earth, I can confidently say that I found my calling. Let's backtrack for a second, I graduated college with a BS in Nutrition but thought in order to become successful and achieve the American Dream, I needed to climb the corporate ladder of hell (You can uppercut me in the ribs if you want, I deserve it).
Last year, I was unexpectedly let go from my monotonous job in marketing and was the exact push needed to build a career worth fighting for.
In 2016, I started my own wellness company, Happy Belly Strong, which takes a 360 approach to achieving optimal health. My mission is to educate our community on the common misconceptions many people believe when it comes to diet & exercise.
Our world needs more than ever to experience just how wonderful you can feel, inside and out, when you're eating real food and moving often. It is a beautiful thing to see someone look at me with fire in their eyes and a smile on their face and say "I get it now.
I am truly happy, I am ferociously strong" Where does boxing and charity come into play?
Boxing was integrated into my life over two years ago when I stumbled into Work Train Fight, also known as WTF.
I needed a challenge and I received that there since day 1. Over the past three years I have grown to love the sport, At first it was classes, then it was 1:1 training, and now sparring. Boxing is super mental and has taught me to overcome a lot of hurdles, not just in the ring, but in life.
My coach Abel, has brought out the confidence in me that I didn't know I had, he has made me into a better person. I am a proud philanthropist, while in college I was an active sister of Delta Phi Epsilon, and helped raise money for numerous charities and organizations that hold close to my heart.
In June of 2015, the owner of WTF, selflessly hosted a charity boxing event for one of the alumni in my sorority who was battling a rare bone cancer. The WTF community helped raise money to help her travel the world one final time before the disease took over.
Seeing such a noble act take place and a community of people come together to help fight for someone they knew nothing about really resonated with me. I will forever be grateful for the members of WTF who helped put a smile on my dear friends face one last time.
When a small group of people come together with a purpose, miracles can happen. Fighting in this event is not only to prove to myself that I can be strong in times of chaos but more to help create a spark to help change the world for the better.
Fun fact: My great Uncle Jimmy (Jimmy Herring) was a pro boxer who fought in the late 40s and early 50s, his nickname was the Golden Boy because he looked like a movie star and was too pretty to be a fighter.
The fight is in my blood, I am doing this for him. I guess you can call me the Golden Girl :)
