Hey everyone,

The link I provided isn't working. Instead, go here: http://marathonfoto.com/site/viewphotos and type in my last name - Osterday - and bib number - 33997.

Looks like they did get me at the finish!

Thanks again,

Andrew

Hello friends! Thanks to yo…
Hello friends!

Thanks to you I am now an NYC Marathon runner! Together we raised over $3,700 for Camp Interactive - YOU GUYS ROCK!

My race day began at 4:30 am, followed by a short bus ride to a dark, desolated field in Staten Island. Thousands of poorly-dressed, skin-and-bone athletes facing 4 hours of 60-mph wind gusts in the shivering cold. Running teams from various countries - Norway, Chile, Japan - huddled together like penguins, while others scoured the grounds zombie-like for trash bags and plastic sheets to wrap themselves in. I felt as if I was dropped into a disaster zone, port-o-potty's our only refuge from the bitter cold. My training partner Neil slowly morphed into a homeless man before my eyes, donning mismatched gloves wrestled from the Goodwill bin and fashioning a crude pair of tights from my spare long-sleeved under armor shirt. Yes, he ran 26.2 miles wearing my shirt as pants.

It was so nice to actually begin moving that we barely registered the frigid wind gusts on the first bridge (gusts so high they cancelled the route for wheelchair athletes). The wind literally ripped off the number pinned to my shirt! Thousands of jackets, hats, pullovers, and sweatpants littered the course, runners rapidly shedding clothing as the sun peaked through the clouds.

The rest of the race is a trance-like blur of storefronts and music, happy cheers and big smiles, aches and pains and moments of pure euphoria, plus more than one hilarious, feces-themed sign ("Keep running, I farted", "1 in 4 runners poop their pants" and "Don't poop your pants"). Seeing Erika and NYC best bud Tim at mile 8 in Brooklyn, and then again at the 25th mile were high points. I like to think Aunt Billie, who passed away Saturday night before the race, helped carry me across the finish line.

It was an incredibly hard, incredibly rewarding experience I'll never forget.

Here are some candid photos of me on the course, looking pretty salty in a few. I'm not sure why they don't have me at the finish - perhaps my appearance at that point was too gruesome to publish: http://marathonfoto.com/Marathon/New-York-City-Marathon--2014/LastName/Osterday/BibNumber/33997/offering/myMarathonfotos/RaceOID/27042014F2/Language/en

The legs still ache, but my heart is full. Thank you to all of you who supported Camp Interactive and their efforts to change lives. Be very, very proud.

Love,

Andrew
