Hi fantastic donor,
It's taken me a little while, but I wanted to send out a big "Thank you" to everyone who contributed to the Human Rights Campaign on my behalf for the Marine Corps Marathon. It's been two and a half months since the marathon on 10/25, and I still think about the experience a lot. Leading up to the big day, I really enjoyed all of my long training runs. Running on hard-packed dirt or trails, having a friend join me for at least the first hour, and listening to lots of podcasts all helped the time pass quickly during even the longest (20 mile!) run. I struggled a bit with Achilles tendinitis, ITB pain in my left knee and some motivation for mid-week runs, especially once I went back to work this fall. However, I stuck to my training schedule for the most part, and often began my weekend runs between 6 and 6:30am! After a fantastic 20 mile run with minimal discomfort, my knee started hurting a few days later, and never really fully healed. So, although I iced, rolled, taped and had many massages, on the day of the marathon, my knee started hurting at about mile 13, much to my dismay, and much earlier than during any training run. So...although I had attempted to stay with the 5 hour pace group, I couldn't quite do it. From mile 13 on Hains Peninsula to about mile 22 over the infamous 14th street bridge, I used every 'mind over matter' technique I knew to keep myself going. Music, smiling, the scenery, crowds, amusing signs and kisses from Simon and John all helped! When I got over the bridge, a friend was waiting for me, and ran with me to mile 25, keeping me going and chatting during the least scenic portion of the marathon. From there, I ran strong to the end, probably my fastest splits!
So, there's the 'race report' :) Thank you for donating. Running for a good cause kept me motivated, and got me out of bed on some early mornings to start my long runs!

I started running again about a week post-marathon, and am now running faster than ever, although for only short distances, aiming for 3-4 miles a few days per week. If physical therapy and strengthening goes well, I may run MCM again in 2016!
