Kate Lotz Meghan Wendelken
KATE: Ever since I first attended the NYC Marathon for the first time in 2014 to witness my brother run, I have said, “One day, I’m going to do this!” There was something so magical about the people and the energy coming from every, single person there, whether they were running or acting as a spectator! Well, the day has come. I cannot wait to run the streets, hear the roars, and read all the signs lined up the avenues in the greatest city in the world, NEW YORK CITY!
MEGHAN: When I was approached at work and asked to run the NYC Marathon for the EJ Autism Foundation, I knew in my heart that this was my time to do it! I have been fortunate enough to work with EJ Autism Foundation in the past through my job at Masera Learning Center. I frequently participate in the Jigsaw Run, and have been able to volunteer at events organized specifically for our students that allow them opportunities for pure fun! I could not be more excited to be running in the NYC Marathon on behalf of such a remarkable foundation!
OUR STORY: Kate and Meghan met while working together at the Masera Learning Center for Eastern Suffolk BOCES, where Kate is an elementary classroom teacher and Meghan is a Speech-Language Pathologist. The Masera Learning Center provides a transdisciplinary program, reflecting the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, to address the needs of elementary through middle school aged students with Autism and related developmental disabilities. All instruction fosters the development of communication, social skills, on-task appropriate behaviors, academics, life skills and pre-vocational skills; through a hierarchy of structured specialized learning opportunities. Both Kate and Meghan share a love of fitness (where they work out at the same gym together), running (where they participate in various local races together), but most of all, helping people. In their job, Kate and Meghan witness and encounter various daily struggles working with these children on the Autism Spectrum and their families. However the successes they help to create in these children’s lives far outweigh the difficulties! Working with these kids is truly a privilege and it is fascinating and so rewarding when they have the opportunity to tap into each child’s unique personality and witness them use the tools they are offered to grow and develop new skills. Both Kate and Meghan are fascinated by how each child’s brain works in order to make sense of their world. It is because of their mutual love of working with kids on the Autism Spectrum and helping other people, they have decided to team up to raise money for the EJ AUTISM FOUNDATION. In order to achieve this goal, they are asking you to join their quest to help these children and their families!
EJ AUTISM FOUNDATION is a charity that supports Autism Programs that work with children diagnosed with Autism. They are not about research or finding a cure….our kids aren’t sick…..they are cheated and don’t receive the services or the tools they need to be the best that they can be. Throughout the years, Kate and Meghan’s school has DIRECTLY benefited from the fundraising efforts of the EJ AUTISM FOUNDATION with the purchase of materials and tools for our ADL Room (where students are able to practice independence in various areas of daily living skills), iPods for the children, the BBQs for our Field Day, as well as various other components around the school where new and fun learning opportunities are presented. Everything you raise will make a difference in the life of someone diagnosed with Autism! Thank you in advance for reading our story and thank you for making a difference in our children’s lives!
