On April 21, 2014, I will be participating in the 118th running of the Boston Marathon. I'll be doing so to honor those who were impacted by last year's horrific events and to support an organization that has become near and dear to my heart, the Joe Andruzzi Foundation (JAF). I did not know the Andruzzi family before the bombs went off last April. After completing 25 miles of the marathon, I met Joe and Jen as we were trying to make our way out of the city. Something small yet powerful is what I remember most about their family; a warm, comforting hug (to a stranger), in the middle of shear chaos, and a sense of purpose as we made our way to safety. During a time of fear and uncertainty, I was comforted by both of them. In the following days, I learned of Jen and Joe's heroic bravery at the finish line shortly after the bombs went off. They assisted those who were wounded and consoled others who needed it, including me. A courageous person is one who stands tall in times of adversity. I learned this first hand on April 15, 2013. I also learned that the Andruzzi's truly exemplify this. Shortly after the marathon, my son James was tasked to write a paper on Heroes. Fittingly enough, he chose Joe Andruzzi.
Sometimes things happen for a reason, a few months later, Jen recognized me in my hometown and once again gave me a familiar warm hug. I had a chance to thank her again for her help. Since then, I have continued to learn more about the Joe Andruzzi Foundation. I was excited and proud to learn about the amazing things that this organization does to support those impacted by cancer. They stand tall during times of adversity!!!! I am now a part of the 2014 Joe Andruzzi Fund Marathon Team. It is an amazing honor and I am so proud to be part of such a great team. The JAF is committed to providing help, hope, and a reason to smile for cancer patients and their families by contributing financial and emotional support when it is needed most. Cancer has touched close friends and family. I run for those who are fighting or have fought cancer and in memory of those who lost their battle with cancer. I run for my love of running and to finish what I didn't get a chance to last year. I would greatly appreciate any donations on my behalf.
