BENEFITING: LIVE FOR TODAY FOUNDATION INC
Kathleen is an eccentric and fun-loving 19-year-old who loves to paint and make new friends daily.
At the age of seven, Kathleen was diagnosed with a rare form of Rhabdomyosarcoma that invaded her spine. But, it wasn't until she was re-diagnosed at 14 with a larger, more aggressive malignant tumor wrapped around her spine, that she began to understand the severity of her cancer diagnosis.
Kathleen underwent a very difficult treatment including nine months of chemotherapy, a month of proton beam therapy, back surgery in Minnesota, and a spinal reconstruction surgery that put her into remission. During this incredibly dark time in her life, she turned to school as an outlet for refuge from her cancer.
"There is a quote from this great old movie called Aunty Mame and it says, 'Live! Live! Live! Life is a banquet and there are plenty of poor suckers starving to death!' Now that I am cancer free, I have a lot of living to do." - Kathleen, Rhabdomyosarcoma
About a year ago, Kathleen faced an alarming update, it seemed her cancer had returned—new masses appeared in her upper back and shoulder. Fortunately, the situation quickly resolved and she is still in remission.
"Cancer will always be a part of me, but it's amazing how life simply goes on. Cancer was definitely a bump in the road, but I'm on the highway now, and I have a lot to see and a lot more to explore. " - Kathleen, Rhabdomyosarcoma
