THE STORY:

Hi! Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. My name is Kathryn Lundgren and I am a freshman at Case Western Reserve University. I have recently been accepted as a field representative for Saha Global, a non-profit organization that works with rural communities in developing countries to establish sustainable clean water and solar electricity businesses. As some of you might know, for the past four years, I have focused a lot of my time with water filtration research and sustainability for developing countries. This summer, I now have an amazing opportunity to help start up a water filtration business completely run by the women in a small village in Northern Ghana and experience my passion first handed. The village I will visiting for four weeks gets their water supply from a local surface water source, which is contaminated with human and animal fecal waste.

While in Ghana, I will be training community-appointed women to use alum (a chemical that reduces turbidity) and a type of chlorine tablet found in the local markets to treat the water they collect. The women will then sell the water for a nominal fee to their friends and neighbors.

Every donation will be contributing to the start up cost of the water business. All of the materials needed for the start up of the business are found in the marketplace near the village; this ensures that if something breaks, the women will know exactly how to get the material and fix the problem. The equipment that will be purchased in the markets include: large drums that will hold the water during various stages of water filtration, taps, chlorine tablets, etc. We will also provide each household a safe storage container that they will use to store their uncontaminated water.

Because of this type of business, 100% of the 78 water businesses are still operational and completely run by local entrepreneurs in the community.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated to start up this business and help the remote village in Northern Ghana experience better sanitation and health!
