THIS IS MY SISTER, Kathy, with two of her grandchildren, during healthier times. There are three more grandchildren in the pictures that follow, and there’s a sixth on the way! Unfortunately, Kathy won’t see them grow up. A few months ago we got the devastating news that she has ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (“Lou Gehrig's Disease”). The recent Ice Bucket Challenges have brought huge awareness, so most people likely know that it is a very progressive disease, and the prognosis is dire. In October last year, she was going about life and functioning normally. Today, she is on a ventilator which enables her to breathe, and she is confined to bed. She is unable to speak and cannot even shift herself around in the bed without assistance.
The expenses are enormous. Though she is in a rehab facility, there are items that are not covered by her private insurance. As she is no longer able to work, she is having to pay the premiums for her health insurance until Medicare is available. Social Security Disability and Medicare applications have been submitted, but we are being told that it will be March, 2015 (at the earliest) before those benefits will be available to her.
Kathy is very independent and would never ask for help from anyone; however, people who love her want to ask for help on her behalf. I understand $110 million was donated to the ALS cause as a result of the Ice Bucket Challenge. That is very encouraging and will, hopefully, fund desperately needed additional research. However, in the meantime, thousands of people like my sister are struggling to manage day-to-day activities with this very progressive, vicious, destructive disease.
This fund has been set up to help Kathy with continually increasing expenses. My hope is that you will find it in your heart to contribute, even a small amount. And if you want to couple that with an Ice Bucket Challenge for Kathy, that’s even better!
PLEASE SHARE ON YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE. And please, at the very least, remember to pray for Kathy. Thank you.
