BENEFITING: CAMP CARE INC
Katie was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma in October 2004 just 2 weeks before her 5th birthday. Playdates went from backyards to hospital rooms. There were no more field trips and class parties. She didn’t want to go anywhere because she thought that kids would make fun of her bald head or the IV bag she carried around. Katie’s eyes lit up as she heard the stories about going away to camp CARE and tubing on the lake and campfires. And this wonderful place included siblings because they knew that cancer effected the entire family. They knew that siblings needed to be kids again too. She counted down the days until summer camp that first year and came back with so many wonderful memories and stories. Every April, she gets so excited when the Camp CARE registration packet comes in the mail and a new countdown begins. Camp CARE gave my little girl her childhood back that first summer. For one week, she forgot about hospitals and surgery and chemo. For one week, she got to be a carefree child who didn’t worry about what people said when they saw her short hair and big scars. For one week every year she gets to be a child without a care in the world. That one week is priceless to us yet we don’t pay one cent for any of it. And that is why we formed this team and are asking you all to give whatever you can so that Camp CARE can continue to give children with cancer this magical, carefree week. Katie chose the name Katie’s Keepers because she wants to keep this camp going forever.
