BENEFITING: Katie Oppo Research Fund Inc
EVENT DATE: Nov 04, 2012
I am running in memory of Katherine Rose Oppo, a 19 year-old-young woman who lost her life to a rare form of Ovarian Cancer.
In August 2010, prior to starting her sophomore year at Johns Hopkins University, Katie was diagnosed with Stage IV Hypercalcemic Small Cell Ovarian Carcinoma . At 19 years old, when your life is just beginning, can you imagine being faced with an extremely rare and life threatening disease? Katie was an intelligent, determined and courageous person whose dream was to become a physician. She was shocked by the lack of knowledge about her rare disease. While she endured intensive chemotherapy under the care of several outstanding physicians, Katie continued to maintain a positive outlook and counter each obstacle with dignity and grace.
On April 11, 2011, after valiantly battling her illness for eight months, Katie left this world without ever giving up hope. She had a unique impact on all who were fortunate enough to have known her, as well as those who only knew her through her story. It is her wish that we shed light on this rare and life threatening disease. Your contributions will be put towards fulfilling Katie’s dream.
The Katie Oppo Research Fund, a 501c3 non-profit organization, was set up to do what Katie wanted, which was to fight back against this disease and be dedicated to raising funds for research of HYPERCALCEMIC SMALL CELL OVARIAN CARCINOMA and other forms of Ovarian Cancer. Proceeds go directly into the research fund and are given to cancer research institutions and individual researchers.

My name is Kevin Byrne. Katie Oppo was one of my daughter Emma's best friends, and I have decided to run the 2012 New York City Marathon in Katie's memory and to raise money for The Katie Oppo Research Fund.
I will meet my goal if we can raise just $1.00 per mile from 1000 people! Please help us get there and help Team Katie! (Of course any larger donations are very welcome and will help us reach our goal sooner!).
Thank you so much for donating! Without your support, our vision would not be possible!
