Dear Family and Friends,
Thank you for your interest in donating to the Allergies and Asthmatics Network & Mothers of Asthmatics! Every donation will make such a huge difference and help me get one step closer to reaching my goal of running my first marathon. Here is some background and the story of how I got to this point.
I am 26, live in Silver Spring MD, and work as a school counselor for Howard County Public Schools. Last summer, on July 16th 2011, I married Thomas Rusu, the best husband I could ask for. My favorite hobby is running. I have been running off and on through out my life and I have been participating in large organized races for a little over a year.
First, I want to give a shout out to my family and friends who encouraged me to become a runner. Dad, thank you for being such a great example during my childhood. I always aspired to run a marathon while looking at those pictures of you at the Pittsburgh finish line in 1990. Jamie KunderSmith, thank you for convincing me I could run a 10K and getting me started in this great part of my life. Dana, thank you for running with me in Annapolis for my first 1/2 marathon. Lindsay, thank you for giving me confidence in my running abilities, for being my training buddy, and my “coach”. Pam and Kala, thank you for keeping me going through the spring and running the Pittsburgh 1/2 Marathon with me. Last but not least, my mom and sister’s who have always been my # 1 fans, encouraging me to keep going.
I decided to take on the challenge for a full marathon after lots of thought and discussion (thank you Tom) and many nights of research. I wanted the experience to be meaningful. I searched for a purpose, and found the Marine Corps Marathon also known as the “People’s Marathon” since there are no cash prizes and so many first time marathon runners. MCM is close to my home, in our nation’s Capital, and gives me a chance to honor and remember many important people who are very important in my life.
October 28th 2012 I will be running MCM in honor of my Grandfather, Charles Sevick, who served in the Marine Corps from 1953-1960 and spent many months overseas. He has been a great father, grandfather, and role model for all the husbands in my family. Also, I am running in memory of Larry Kunder the loving father of my one of my very best friends, Jamie Kunder. Larry served in the Marine Corps and always took a physical challenge, along with all other parts of life, with such a great attitude.
Finally, when I found Allergies and Asthmatics Network & Mothers of Asthmatics, I decided to raise money in honor of my nephew Max David Anderson who is allergic to peanuts and most tree nuts and his mother John and Beth Anderson, my sister and brother in-law, who are a wonderful parents and they and have learned to keep Max safe and do everything they can to be a parents. My main goal is to promote the importance of understanding allergic reactions, how to prevent them, and how to be aware of everything you hand a child who may have food allergies. Finally, my husband struggled with asthma and allergies as a child and his mother Kim Rusu did everything she could to keep him healthy and safe. Because of these two very special people in my life I feel encouraged to raise money for this cause.
