I am running the NYC 1/2 Marathon on March 20th. I started running a year and a half ago and I am hooked. My first half marathon was in September and I really enjoyed it. Now I have a chance to do something I love in the best city in the world, NYC, AND raise money for a very special charity, Organization for Autism Research.
As you probably know, my 11 1/2 year old daughter, Kelly, has autism spectrum disorder.
Therapies and school have been life changing for Kelly. She is doing things I NEVER imagined she could/would do. My one wish when Kelly was 3 was to be able to have a conversation with her. Now she won't stop talking! I believe she will continue to progress. Most importantly, she is a happy kid. I wasn't able to say she was a few years ago.
I am incredibly grateful for all the amazing people who help us. I like to refer to them as "Team Kelly". We are so fortunate to have great insurance coverage and the "best of the best" for therapies and therapists, which include: ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Therapeutic Horseback riding, social skils groups, LMFT (Licensed Marriage Family Therapy), a Parent Support Groups, and a Support Group for the siblings of the affected child. Our town also has an incredible Special Education program as well.
Not all families are this fortunate to have the plentiful resources and supports Kelly has to succeed. My wish is to raise money for families have these services for their child with Autism. This is where the Organization for Autism Research comes in. Here is where your donations will go:
$10 provides a Curriculum in a Box professional development set to general education teachers.
$25 provides 15 copies of A Guide to Safety to families and first responders.
$100 provides the Kit for Kids peer education resource to an entire elementary or middle school.
$150 provides 100 copies of a Life Journey through Autism guidebook sent to a community support group or military installation.
$1,000 provides a research grant for a graduate student studying autism.
$3,000 provides a scholarship for a student with autism to attend college.
$30,000 fully underwrites an applied research pilot study
