BENEFITING: CONNECTICUT BURNS CARE FOUNDATION INCORPORATED
EVENT: The Kayak-a-thon 2016
EVENT DATE: Jun 25, 2016
My brother John started this fundraising event a few years ago and I am excited to be paddling with my daughter Kelsey as a relay team!
My personal goal is to support the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation “Send a Kid to Camp” campaign. $2,500 covers the cost for one camper to attend. Campers attend free of charge.
Please take a few minutes to watch the video about the Burn Camp! Also, the photos I have posted include one of Kelsey at Burn Camp and others from past Kayak-a-thons.
We became aware of the Children’s Burn Camp through the staff at Bridgeport Hospital. Kelsey was in the Burn Unit for 6 weeks when she was 7 years old back in 2001/2002.
When we looked into the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation, we liked their goals for the camp – campers should just have fun, be kids…swimming, canoeing, archery, ropes course, arts & crafts and more. It’s not a “therapy” camp. While the camp has staff to accommodate therapy sessions, that would be a personal request and not a structured part of the camp day. “Therapy” however was a by-product in a much more organic way! Campers could build relationships with other burn survivors their age as well as counselors who are burn care nurses, firefighters or burn survivors themselves.
Kelsey is fortunate that her scars can be covered by clothing. At 8 years old and after just 1 week at Burn Camp, she had gained the confidence she needed to be herself, to wear exactly what she wanted including short sleeved shirts, to be prepared for comments and stares, to know that she was not alone in this experience.
Kelsey is now 21 and the Children’s Burn Camp is still an important part of her life. After 10 years as a camper, Kelsey attended a Counselor-in-Training Exchange program at a Burn Camp in Utah. She continues to be involved in her CT Burn Camp as a Counselor and volunteers for many of their fundraising events.
If you can, please support us in paddling across the Cape Cod Bay on June 25th! We have seen first-hand that your contribution, in any amount, will make a substantial difference in the life of a child with severe burn injuries.
Thank you for your time,
