Many of you know that in very early 2001 I was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma (a.k.a. kidney cancer). Thank God for kidney stones. Anyway, I had surgery late in January 2001 that removed my right kidney, the stone, and a tumor about the size of my fist. Thankfully I've been cancer free since.
A couple years ago, my wife Lis and I got bicycles (and trailers for the kids) so we could exercise and be out and active as a family. We found we really loved to ride. A friend suggested that we look into the charity rides as a way to help support some of the local causes. We researched a bit and did our first charity bike rides, the Tour de BBQ in 2011. So far this year I've done three; Rotary Ride for 30 miles, Sunflower to Roses (another LiveSTRONG event) for 36 miles and Crank Out Hunger (a local food pantry) for 37 miles. The last one on my to-do list this year is Tour de BBQ '12 for 35 miles on 10/6.
This year, the Tour de BBQ has added a fundraising component. They've asked for each participant to raise at least $75. I've set my "goal" to be $100. The donations are 100% tax deductible and will stay 100% in Kansas City to support The University of Kansas Cancer Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital’s oncology program.
You all know it's not my style to ask anyone to donate to any cause but in this case I make an exception. The programs that LiveSTRONG funds help not just those dealing with this terrible disease but also their families and friends and can really makes all the difference in the world for them. If you have the means and donate, thank you very much! If not, then thank you for at least checking out the page.
