BENEFITING: AFRICAN SOUL AMERICAN HEART
Uganda is currently in its rainy season which will continue until May. A second, longer rainy season runs from August through November. This year, the ASAH Marathon team is fundraising to help keep the ASAH staff safe and dry through the rainy seasons. Their goal is to raise a total of $7020 to buy the following items:
• Each of the girls has a mosquito net, but they have to be replaced about once a year due to damages to their frame or holes in the netting. In order to better protect our students and on-site staff from malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases, we are fundraising to replace damaged nets. A good quality mosquito net costs about $45. Replacing 50 mosquito nets over the course of the year will cost about $2250
• For the rainy season we hope to purchase raincoats, boots, and umbrellas. The girls have a 15-minute walk to school on dirt paths each day. During the rainy season the girls may walk to school in the rain every day. Raincoats, umbrellas, and boots will help keep the girls and their school supplies dry. We estimate the cost of a raincoat, umbrella, and pair of boots will be about $65 per girl. 58 girls and staff x $65= $3770
• Right now, our cooks bake bread by setting a pot with dough on hot coals, then covering the pot with corrugated sheet metal and shoveling more hot coals on top, as seen in the images above. This method is both labor intensive and dangerous. With a new charcoal oven, the cooks will be able to bake better bread more easily and safely. We estimate the cost of an oven plus transportation to our site to be about $1000. If the final price of the oven and transportation is less, the extra money will go to other kitchen supplies and charcoal for the oven.
