BENEFITING: Rivers of the World
Province: Kasai (Kananga) Village: Tshikaji Project: Hydro Electric Plant maintenance Why is this hydro system critical? Tshikaji village is home to the Good Shepherd Hospital, the major referral hospital for a population base of approximately 1 million people. In addition, the IMCK (Christian Medical Institute of the Kasai) located here has two nursing schools (essentially LPN and RN programs). There are also 30 medical students located at this hospital doing their internships. Thus, this hospital not only saves lives now but also is instrumental in the future health of the Congo. Tshikaji is located approximately 10 miles outside of Kananga in the Kasai Occidental province. The hydro provides 24/7 electricity and running water to the hospital and the nursing schools as well as the small station for staff housing. The Flood: In April 2016, flooding caused the water level in the small river/reservoir to dramatically rise overnight. Flooding breeched the dam because of debris blocking the spillways and the turbines. Damage was done. We quickly raised $20,000 to pay workers and within a couple of weeks, the electricity was restored due to some 200 workers manually extracting the debris. However, that was a short term solution and much more work is needed to ensure the long-term continued operation of the hydro system.
