Keep a Family in Their Home
Organized by: Douglas Weller
(I am looking to help out a family of five (Children ages 14, 9 and 2) that is about to get evicted from their apartment. I met the family through a home hospital teaching assignment for one of their children. The student has been such a pleasure to work with on a daily basis. He completes all of his work and goes above and beyond in his efforts to succeed. Unfortunately, last week when I went to their home and my student hadn't done his work. I chalked it up to a teenager having one bad day over a four month period, no big deal. However, the next day the same thing occurred. I pulled the mother aside and asked if there was anything going on and that is when I was informed of their situation. Unfortunately, they don't have any family living in the state that can provide shelter for them and they have nowhere to go. I teach in a district that has a large population of students that are from low income homes, and to be honest involved in gang activity. This family has done everything they can to keep this young man from falling prey to the trap of gang life, and so far they have succeeded. I know I can't solve all the problems of the world, but I think with the help of friends, family, and even strangers, I think we can save this family. They have fallen behind due to the father injuring his back and not being able to do his job as a security guard. Fortunately, he is back to work and mom is trying to find a job as a medical assistant. If you can help please don't hesitate to do so, and please share with anyone you think may be able to lend a hand.
