BENEFITING: CAPITAL OF TEXAS MEDIA FOUNDATION
This is Mike Kanin. He is the publisher of the Austin Monitor. For many years, he’s spent each Council Thursday live-tweeting the blow-by-blow from Austin City Council chambers. He has not bothered to add up the amount of time involved, but we’d guess that it’s many hundreds of hours.
Thing is: As much as Kanin loves spending these Thursdays with you in the Twitterverse—and really, he does—he has other work that calls. The Austin Monitor runs on subscription memberships and various forms of charitable giving. Kanin is in charge of making all of that happen. Each Thursday that he spends 12 hours with you also represents 12 hours that he should be out there raising cash—and isn’t.
So it’s like this: Do you like Kanin’s live-tweeting? Do you rely on it to get you to City Hall on time for your item? Do you quietly check in on the #atxcouncil feed to see how—say, Short Term Rentals—turned out? Then we need you to keep Kanin in chambers. We’ve done the math, and we figure that it will take $10,000 to justify our letting Kanin spend all Thursday with you.
Good news is that we have all year to raise it. Maybe stick a dollar in this here jar each time you like a tweet, or retweet a tweet. Maybe send along $10 every time you use his feed to follow an item or $25 whenever you see Kanin in chambers past midnight. Really, we want Kanin to be at Council. You can help us keep him there.
