Please help us assist Mr. Simpson with the necessary repairs to make his home healthy, safe, and stable. Consider participating in a volunteer project to work on light repairs, general patching, and painting once the critical infrastructure repairs are completed by licensed professionals. You can also help by contributing to our fundraising goal of $1,000 to pay for the supplies and skilled labor. This will be used as seed money to jumpstart a broader campaign in January.
Charlie Simpson purchased his 2-unit home in Humboldt Park nearly 30 years ago. Now 76 years old, the retired union laborer lives there with his wife, daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter. For years, he has been a caregiver, looking after his family, his neighbors, and the block, in which he takes great pride. In communities like his, it is imperative that residents like Mr. Simpson remain in their homes to provide oversight and stability of the block, and to teach a sense of pride in place for newer residents.
He has had a run of bad luck over the past few years. In June, 2011, Mr. Simpson's roof was damaged after a hail storm. In September, 2012, he began working with Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS) after he fell behind on mortgage payments due to his diversion of his limited income to repair his roof. With NHS’ help, in December, 2012, Mr. Simpson was granted a loan modification to prevent a foreclosure, but he then suffered a stroke and has been rehabilitating since then.
NHS has been working with Mr. Simpson to make repairs to his house. There are some public grants available to help him with his roof. The problem, though, is that Mr. Simpson also needs extensive repair work inside his house to bring it up to minimum health and safety standards, so unless he can get the interior work done himself, he cannot utilize the public grant. Mr. Simpson's home needs extensive electrical work, the removal of an unsafe wall mounted space heater and a new boiler. Mr. Simpson also needs extensive ceiling and wall drywall repair and painting; bathroom tile repair and replacement; and bathroom floor repairs.
Mr. Simpson has been taking care of those around him for most of his life and it's time for the community to take care of him so that he can remain in his home to carry on as the anchor on his block. Please help us help him stay in his home.
