KEEP the experience ALIVE
Organized by: Bruce Berry
My name is Bruce Berry and I am a Physical Education and Health Instructor, as well as the Head Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field coach for Central High School Boy’s and Girl’s programs in Newark, NJ. I am in my 9th season as Head coach here at Central, but am in my 23rd year of coaching between the high school and NCAA Division I levels. Having been an elite high school, Division I, and post-collegiate Track and Field athlete, I am fully aware that to be a successful student-athlete, or run a successful program you must be provided support in ALL aspects of the program educationally, socially, but most importantly financially. I have been able to elevate Central’s program by maintaining the highest GPA’s in the school as per extra-curricular activities, continued community service projects, and something I’m most proud of, placing 28 student-athletes into college on some sort of athletics scholarship, including 10 on FULL ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS! Despite my greatest efforts to keep costs to a minimum, I find it truly difficult to maintain the level of excellence that my student-athletes have come to expect from a 1st class program. In the past the district “took care” of my programs operating expenses… uniforms, shoes, equipment, meet entry fees, travel, lodging and meals for the Penn Relays, and State meets. All of this has come to a halt over the past few years. The budget belt has been tightened and coaches are feeling the pain, mainly via our personal finances. I NEVER entered coaching to get rich, but I did expect that the small amount of compensation I do receive wouldn’t be going right back into the program, but instead could be used for a weekend get-a-way with the family since they sacrifice SO VERY MUCH when I am coaching…Sadly that hasn’t happened in years. One of our most rewarding trips is our TRADITIONAL journey April to the famed Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA. The students are treated to 4 days away from home, an outstanding track meet, immersed in the campus life on one of the most prestigious universities in the US, The University of Pennsylvania, and exposed to over 200 college coaches for recruitment purposes. This is also the most costly. This is why I am seeking your financial support to fund this trip. Between hotel, meals, and entertainment I spend somewhere north of $4,000. I am seeking $4,500 for our 2016 Penn Relays trip on April 27-30, 2016. I am DESPARATELY asking that you provide my student-athletes to attend this year’s Penn Relays, and give them an opportunity they may NEVER again have a chance to experience…THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
