BENEFITING: OHIOHEALTH CORPORATION
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
This year, I'm dedicating my NYC marathon run to honor and celebrate the life of my dear friend Kelli Weaver-Miner, who passed away in May from breast cancer.
Kelli was one of my first friends, since kindergarten, where we got into a lot of mischief (mostly instigated by her getting me to do whatever she wanted - either with her impish smile or by bribing me with m&ms). In those early years, we were quite inseparable, except for when teachers separated us for talking during "quiet time". Eventually, we went to different grade schools, high schools, colleges and though we didn't see each other that frequently, we stayed close. Over the years, I was so proud to see her grow into the amazing woman she became and felt very fortunate to have such a caring person in my life for so many years.
Even when she was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, it never diminished her determination, her interest in other people's lives or her ability to be a great mom. I so admired her for that strength and courage.
It still doesn't feel real yet. I sometimes expect to read some hilarious comment or supportive message from her on my FB page. I really miss her energy and warmth.
Funds will be donated to the Kobacker House (part of the Ohio Health Foundation) in Columbus, Ohio (https://www.ohiohealth.com/kobackerhouse/), a hospice center with top medical care in a calming, serene environment, where Kelli spent her final days.
There are a lot of wonderful organizations that are dedicated to finding new cancer treatments. But equally as important are organizations that provide comfortable and dignified settings for friends and family to spend quality time with their loved ones in their final days. Those few days I spent with Kelli at Kobacker House, catching up, reminiscing and laughing over memories were priceless. And I'm really thankful for that.
For me, this is the best way to pay tribute to a wonderful friend.
Thank you for your support!
