As a native New Yorker running in the New York City marathon has been a long-time dream of Kells. With a background in fashion & a passion for community engagement Kells is excited to take on running in his first marathon & raising funds for the east side house.
Kells Barnett has been surrounded and influenced by fashion his whole life, designing &
sketching his own clothing since the age of 17 Kells knew his calling was in fashion design
and/or the business of fashion. Growing up in the business and getting a hands-on learning
experience under the mentorship & guidance of Guy Wood, Kells gained the knowledge of the
fashion industry at an early age. So it was only becoming that at the young age of 25 he would
become an integral force in business and marketing to eventually claim the title of Director of
Marketing at custom clothier, 5001 FLAVORS, and its bespoke retail expression, Harlem
A graduate from Dowling College (Long Island, NY) with a Bachelors of Business and M.B.A;
Kells has been extremely instrumental in helping brands grow their business with effective
marketing and sales initiatives. “I already knew fashion, I continued on to college to learn about
business,” says Kells, and with his hard work and contributions to the fashion industry, as well
as, the social services field, Kells was honored as Top 40 Alumni at Dowling College in 2009.
Throughout his work Kells has become a social advocate for community prosperity, change and
community self-preservation. “The beauty about fashion is the voice it gives you, you become
such an influence when you dress well, so I’ve always used that voice of influence to both sell
clothes but more importantly promote community pride.”
A true humanitarian at work, Kells’ true passion is working within the community with many
charitable organizations in which he takes great pride in. As a global citizen for change, he
volunteers countless hours a month to working with the mentally-disabled, the homeless and
underprivileged or underserved populations through active work with non-profit organizations
such as Meals on Wheels, Housing Works, Career Gear and The League: DGM, in which he is also

figure in the local Harlem community and a vocal-piece for helping others overcome whatever
odds they may face to reach success, Kells is a true champion of helping others. In 2013 Complex
Magazine featured him in the Harlem Rising G-Shock watch feature. Kells launched
#TakeCareOfHarlem  – a social media hashtag call-to-action campaign created to promote
community endeavors and to cater to specific issues apparent to the community needs, that has
since expanded to all five boroughs of New York City & New Jersey [#TakeCareOfEnglewood,
Kells sits on the board of Y.U.N.G Harlem, an anti-gun organization in which serves as a vehicle
for community change. Was awarded, alongside The League: DGM & Harlem Haberdashery
 with the Community Spirit Award by Mount Morris Community Park Improvement
Association [MMPCIA], awarded, by Mayor Bill DeBlasio, The Official Certificate of Recognition
From The Mayor's Office For The Collective Community Efforts Of Harlem Haberdashery, Take
Care of Harlem & The League: DGM , N.A.N Man Of The Year: Man Of Vision Award .
Kells combines style & fashion to connect to the youth & promote community. Future endeavors
include the expansion of his art program #ArtLivesinHarlem & additional intra-borough
campaigns i.e. [#TakeCareOfTheBronx, #TakeCareOfBrooklyn, #TakeCareOfQueens] which will
serve as a gear up for #tTakeCareOfNYC – a core-centric program based around communities to
help promote arts, music and entrepreneurship.
