This year, we are thrilled at the opportunity to have Kelly and John DiCapua as our Kick Cancer Overboard beneficiary. When you read Kelly’s story, you will see why:
Kelly was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last year, at age 45. Despite the physical signs of cancer for many years, Kelly just could not accept it. Her first biopsy, almost 9 years earlier due to lumps, left continually worsening breast deformity and she simply assumed her symptoms were the remnants of the botched biopsy.
After a sonogram and mammogram Kelly got the dreaded call at work: "You have cancer!" There were no words to describe the heartbreak that led to a sobbing breakdown that lasted 15 minutes. As if getting the news herself wasn’t tough enough, it was now time for her to tell her loved ones. Kelly and John have a combined total of six children and five grandchildren. She has not seen daughter Samantha, who is stationed in Hawaii with the Marine Corp, in 2 ½ years though they speak often. All of her calls were tough despite Kelly’s determination to keep an upbeat tone in each of the conversations.
The first course of treatment was a mastectomy. With her family there for support, they completed the surgery the following week. Then a relatively routine port surgery that was supposed to be outpatient turned into a three-hour ordeal that resulted in a collapsed lung and a 5-day hospital stay to repair the problem. Kelly’s cancer is Stage 3 and she just finished five months of chemo which was so much more taxing then she ever imagined!
It has been the love of her husband John, friends, and family that keeps her going every day! Her next course of treatment will be 30 rounds of radiation. After that…time will tell. Kelly and John plan to take it one day at a time.
Kelly remains optimistic and positive despite her many obstacles and daily struggles. She soldiers on “with gratitude each morning knowing your higher power is telling you I'm giving you another day, make the most if it.” These are words we should all strive to live by.
We at Zynergy Cares think John & Kelly need a break. We want to sponsor them, through Kick Cancer Overboard, to set sail for Bermuda in October on the Anthem of the Seas where John & Kelly can spend some time deciding which tropical drink they would prefer instead of when to start her next round of radiation. Even if only for a few days, I can’t think of a more deserving couple to get that break. Please help us help John and Kelly. Any amount you can give will move us closer to our goal. Thank you so much for your support!
