I'm running the 2016 NYC Marathon as a member of the Covenant House team. Covenant House is an organization that works to get homeless youth in New York off the streets. As some of you may know, this is a cause that's been very important to me since I was in college.
As a journalism student, I wrote my final column based on conversations with adults working in a homeless shelter where I was volunteering. Many told me of their horrifying experiences as homeless children and teenagers, often suffering at the hands of mentally ill or drug-addicted parents. One woman's story really struck me: It took her until she was 13 years old and in therapy through a shelter to realize that life as she knew it, surrounded by drug dealers and sex workers, was not, in fact, "normal".
Since then, I've worked with a number of organizations that focus on supporting impoverished and homeless children and families in meaningful, effective ways. Covenant House is an incredible organization that helps children and young adults break cycles of homelessness that often end in human trafficking and prison, and also work at the state and national level to advocate for homeless youth.
Please support Covenant House and its important work by donating to my race!
