Turn Kelly and James’ Wedding Nightmare into a Dream!
Organized by: Simon Rego
EVENT DATE Aug 03, 2014
The story of Kelly and James’ wedding planning started on a happy note. As Kelly entered her last year of Graduate School, everything was set for Kelly and James to be able to close out the academic year in the best possible way - surrounded by friends and family while exchanging their wedding vows! After much deliberation and an extensive search for their ideal location, they were thrilled to find a venue they loved, secured a date, and mailed out their invitations.
Unfortunately, the year then took a turn for the worse after a hospitalization forced Kelly not only to have to defer her graduate training for a year, but also prevented her from working. Despite this challenging time, however, everything was still set for a wonderful wedding thanks to the overwhelming support of their families.
Then, incredibly, while she was literally returning home from her wedding shower, Kelly happened across an article on the Internet describing a venue in Brooklyn that had abruptly shut down leaving staff unpaid and 100+ couples high and dry. As it turns out this venue, Rebar, was the place that Kelly and James had chosen for their wedding!

Ultimately, the owner of the venue declared bankruptcy, thereby leaving Kelly and James with a loss of 75% of the total cost of their wedding! The owner has since been arrested and it has come to light that he owes over $2 million in taxes, in addition to having kept many thousands of dollars in deposits paid by couples for their weddings. While there is a civil suit pending, it has been made very clear to Kelly and James that there is almost no chance of them receiving any financial remuneration.
As such, Kelly and James were forced to scramble to find a new place that could support their original wedding date (as friends and family had largely already booked flights). Fortunately they were able to find a place, but are now trying to make up the significant funds they lost.
If you’ve ever met Kelly and James, even briefly, then you already know what wonderful people they are and what an incredible couple they make. You also likely know that they would never ask for help in this way themselves. Well, that’s where my wife and I come in. We’ve known Kelly and James for several years now and were very moved when we heard what had happened. After all, it was James who was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule and take on the significant responsibility of doing the photography at our wedding when we were in need a couple of years ago!
So, we were eager to make this happen for them! Even so, when we presented the idea of doing this fundraiser for them, they insisted on taking several days to think over our offer, so that they could feel comfortable endorsing it. Fortunately, they came around!
So, here we are. I challenge the family members, friends, colleagues, and other generally charitable people in their lives (and the world!) to help. It feels good! And in Crowdrise speak, “IYDGBNOWLY” (If you don't give back, no one will like you!).
Please give whatever you can. Ask your friends to give. Post a link to this page on your Facebook wall. Tweet about it. This way, we can all help Kelly and James accomplish what should be a wonderful start to a more hopeful year!
