In 2006, Labor Day Monday I was driving on route 33 In the poconos. It was a windy day and I have a lead foot? I hit an “S” curve going way too fast and flipped my car. I was medevaced to the Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest and sustained 7 skull fractures, a shattered optic nerve, a broken nose, broken toes, a torn carotid artery, and blood on the brain.
My parents immediately rushed to the hospital and upon their arrival they were asked what my religious beliefs were so they prepared for the worst. They were told all the injuries I sustained and said IF I survive, I might not be “ME” 11 days in intensive care brought incredible heartache to my loved ones. I was unable to walk and open my eyes. I heard my family but could not see them, I used and leaned heavily on a walker. A few days later one eye slowly opened, and I was able to watch the Dallas Cowboys in a hospital bed with my Dad, I remember thinking “wow this sucks! Def need them to fix my other eye!” That day never came.....
After many months of various therapies and amazing family support, I was walking, my cognitive skills were great, acupuncture and chiropractic had done wonders! Things were going great and I was fighting hard to make 100% comeback. The only lingering issues was I still had no movement or vision in my left eye. I felt very down and sad at my personal appearance. It wasn’t until 2013 I found running and the IM ABLE Foundation. This was my game changer, along with meeting Chris Kaag!
I did my first 5K in 2012 and said “oh this isn’t bad” then came Grings Mill 10K, 2013 my first half marathon in the GREATEST place ever! Asbury Park! After that I decided I wanted to do the TCS New York City Marathon! In 2014 I was given a spot by the IM ABLE foundation and did my 1st marathon! Now it’s 2018 and Ive completed ALL 6 of the Abbott World Marathon Majors all while using the gift of my 2 feet to give back to others.
Inspiration comes in all forms, and I encourage everyone to dig deep and look within. I am inspired and motivated by a ton of people everyday, but I’m unselfishly inspired the most by ME!!! Everyday I wake up and look in the mirror, I’m reminded that I’m not perfect, I’m not fast, I might not be able to run today without stopping or crying, I might not get a PR, but I’m putting one foot in front of the other and doing what I can with the gifts God has given me. I have THE BEST people by my side ensuing I keep it up and thanks to them, quitting is not an option! I hope anyone who needs a boost in their life reads this and knows that YOU CAN DO IT!!!” —Kelly
