BENEFITING: Every Mother Counts
EVENT DATE: Oct 13, 2013
For my first (and most likely only) marathon, I am raising money for the organization Every Mother Counts. Every Mother Counts is a campaign to end preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world.
This charity has become important to me because of my own childbirth experiences. After a long and intense labor, my first daughter was born via c-section due to brow presentation, a relatively rare occurrence that makes it very difficult and in most cases impossible to deliver without a c-section. Luckily for both of us, we were in the excellent care of my Ob, at a renowned hospital with access to all of the supplies and medical interventions we could need. Had this same experience been elsewhere, either or both of us would have likely died. Fortunately, we were both completely fine, and I went on to deliver my next daughter via a successful VBAC. I often pause to think about how quickly my situation could have gone horribly wrong had I not had the resources available to me. For so many women around the world, they do not have this luxury, one that many of us consider a given. Every Mother Counts team members choose to participate in races because often, distance is the biggest barrier to a woman and her family getting the care they need.
