I am finishing up my degree (a BFA with a concentration in K-12 Art Education and licensure, an emphasis in photography, and a minor in art history, theory, and criticism) at Metropolitan State College of Denver and I will (hopefully!) be graduating next spring! I have always had an interest in studying abroad and being so close to graduation, when the option to study abroad this summer presented itself, I had to jump at the opportunity! When I ‘grow up’ I want to be an art teacher; a teacher who makes a difference in the lives of my students. I believe it is my responsibility as a teacher to encourage curiosity and real world experiences in my students. I am passionate about the arts and the development of an intercultural understanding and respect in my future classroom. Studying abroad in Italy gives me the opportunity to gain insight into another culture while taking classes toward my minor in art history. I am excited and eager to study Italian art and architecture in it’s original setting in Rome! While in Italy I will also be working on my BFA thesis, using the medium of photography to explore new places with my lens. I wish to see the world outside of my own culture with the hopes of abolishing my own perceptions and misconceptions about the world, bearing witness to as many things as possible about the world and the people in it and capturing these experiences with my camera’s lens to further explore them through my artwork. It is these experiences that I wish to explore through photography and share with my future students. Exploring the art of Rome and a history that spans thousands of years and being able to capture these experiences with my camera is truly a dream. Please help me make my dream become a reality!
