On April 15, 2013 I'm going to run the Boston Marathon, again in support of the Greater Boston Chapter (GBC) of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association.
As you probably know if you've talked to me at all in the past few years, spinal cord injury rehabilitation is something that I feel very passionately about. Sustaining a spinal cord injury is a devastating experience, both for the individual and for their family; but with adequate supports and resources, it is certainly possible to move forward and lead a full and productive life.
The GBC is an organization that provides these necessary supports, allowing people with spinal cord injuries and their families to get beyond crisis mode and back to living. They provide peer mentorship to those in the hospital, organize community support groups, advocate within the community for people with disabilities, and provide necessary resources such as durable medical equipment and adapted vehichles to those in need.
This past year, the GBC donated an adapted vehichle to a young father of three, which allowed him to get himself to and from his therapies and drive his kids to their school and sports games. In addition, the GBC provided two individuals (the two guys pictured on the left -- also two of my favorite people in the world), with scholarships to attend a life-changing rehabilitation camp called Empower SCI, whose primary aim is to empower those with spinal cord injuries to lead more happy, independent and meaningful lives. I also happened to be working at that camp, and was able to wittness first-hand the difference that the GBC was able to make in these individual's lives.
Please join me in helping the GBC continue their work in bettering the lives of those with spinal cord injuries.
