Ken and Sam Buckman
Ok friends and family! I deliberately avoided publicizing any sense of of my participation in the upcoming Chicago Marathon Sunday October 12. (less than two weeks away!) Frankly, there is a lot stacked against a newbie,(I actually hate running-LOL), overweight, beer drinking, 44 year old to even make it to the start line, let alone finish 26.2 miles.
Thankfully minor injury only luck and 8 full months of training has now got me (foolishly?) confident enough to actively come to you and ask you to support me and donate to what Im running for. I may be bloodied, dehydrated, crawling, and log a time that is consistent with them taking down the course, but I will cross the finish line!
My Story and why I'm running: (And who I humbly ask you to donate to)
CHILDRENS CANCER. Those that know our family know we have a passion for awareness and funding for this horrific disease and have for many years. Statistics prove that just about anyone reading this knows a child either battling cancer or who has died from this horrible disease that has yet to find a cure. (1 in 235 will be diagnosed before the age of 20 currently) The charity I chose and joined the team for the Chicago Marathon efforts (and one I recently joined the Board of Directors so I can assure you i know exactly where your money is going!) is Cals Angels. http://www.calsangels.org. Cals is a fantastic organization that grants wishes to Chicagoland kids fighting cancer. Please take a moment to view the short video on the website and read a bit about why Cals is making a profound impact on our community. Know also that I would be thrilled to get anyone interested more directly involved. (Including the amazing experience of delivering a wish with your whole family to a cancer patients family.) I try not to ask for money very often to friends and colleagues as we are all involved in so much, but if childhood cancer is on your heart in anyway, please support me. Any amount is appreciated and will be used to change lives. "I guarantee it" (mens suite factory spokesperson voice)
HEALTH: Well lets start with the fact that when I told a select few in february I was going to run, I was 38 pounds heavier and couldnt run a 1/4 mile, let alone 26.2. My cholesterol was through the roof and I have a family history of heart issues. At 44 , despite me not wanting to admit it, I'm no spring chicken anymore. It was time to make a decision. Add in our 4 kids who are now 12,12,12, and almost 11 and quite impressionable... and the decision was made by Heide and I to lead by example as parents. It has been a heck of a journey. The key is going to be keeping fitness and healthy habits after the marathon is done (always allowing room for great craft beers of course)
There is one dissapointment in all the good this experience has brought. Heide and I went on this journey unified (our motto is "do life together" ) and expected to cross the finish line in tears and holding hands. Unfortunately, Heide was injured about 6 months into training and could not continue running. While there still is hope she can jump on the course with her bib on and finish with me, I have missed her greatly with each milestone achieved. Luckily she is now my #1 fan and will guarantee ( along with a party bus full of friends and family ) that I cross the finish line and earn any donations you trust me with.
Anyone is welcome to the post party from 1-7pm at Dugans Pub at 128 S. Halsted St. Plenty of parking and Cals Angels team should all be there. I may be in a wheel chair but I will have a kick butt Ice cold IPA in my hand!
God Bless and THANK YOU!!!
Bucky (Ken Buckman- but I will be running bib # 51979 as BUCKY. My start time is approximately 8:15 am and I am shooting to complete around 1:15pm)
