THE STORY:

KATIE’S STORY

Although we don’t know what Katie’s former life was like, we do know some of her story as do many of you. We got a call to help some of the Anaconda cats. Their owner was a hoarder of over 40 cats and was allegedly involved in the murder of her husband, a KKK leader.

Whenever cats are in this type of situation, we try our best to help. Several of the cats we took were FIV+ or FeLV+. Our sweet little guy Rudy didn’t make it after being hospitalized for several days. Then there is Katie who came in with a huge gaping wound on her neck and what we thought was a tumor on the other side of her neck. She had what is called nectrotizing steatits and myositis (fatty tissue inflammation) caused by infection and poor nutrition.  The hard “tumor” was actually layers of infection that healed over and over again with so much dead tissue it became hardened. Katie was hospitalized for weeks as she was too weak to endure surgery, but it was needed to save her life. Due to initial severe dehydration her kidneys showed her to be in kidney failure. Luckily over time, her kidneys improved and we had to take the risk of putting her through surgery. She was running a fever and we knew the infection was taking over her body and this was her only chance.

We are happy to report that surgery was a success and Katie is doing much better. Currently in a foster home to continue her healing, she has come a long way and is still working on getting her full appetite back. As Katie continues her journey, we cannot wait for the day she is healthy enough to come back to the shelter and find a forever home all of her own! She is a sweet, shy girl who deserves much more than what she had. Five Acres Animal Shelter relies on you to be able to continue our life saving measures we take for our cats and dogs. Katie’s medical bills totaled over $4,000 and we can use your help more than ever. Please donate to Shadow's Fund through this fundraiser or our website. You can also mail donations to Five Acres at 1099 Pralle Ln. St. Charles, MO 63303. Your donations will save lives!
