Conservation!

The main purpose of Kentucky Reptile Zoo is the production of venom for medical and pharmaceutical research and the production of antiserum, the antidote for venomous snakebite. The Kentucky Reptile Zoo is also dedicated to the conservation of reptiles and educating the public as to their important role in the ecosystem.

One main purpose of Kentucky Reptile Zoo is the production of venom for research and the production of antiserum, the antidote for venomous snakebite. But an equally important purpose that we dedicate ourselves to is conservation.

We house roughly 1500 snakes at the zoo. This allows us to collect a larger amount of venom without having to extract from each individual snake too often. The animals can lead long, healthy lives at the zoo while still contributing to research!

Unfortunately, some of the species we have are suffering from population decline in the wild. One of these is the beautiful St. Lucia lancehead (Bothrops caribbaeus). It is only found on the island, where it is threatened with extinction. By keeping these snakes at the zoo, we are helping to ensure that these animals are not wiped out completely. With enough funding, we would be able to install another building on our grounds to house all our St. Lucia lanceheads. Our buildings average 100 animals, so even one will allow us to keep all of them in an environment that fits their needs and start a breeding program to keep their numbers from falling.

By contributing to the Kentucky Reptile Zoo you can know you have taken part in a process that can save and change the lives of people and reptiles around the world!
The Kentucky Reptile Zoo is dedicated to providing venom for research and educating the public to the importance of reptiles, their contributions to humanity and the importance of their conservation. Reptiles hold a vital role in the ecosystem and their venom is being used in research for conditions such as diabetes, heart medications, pain management and used to make life-saving antiserum.
