BENEFITING: FULLER CENTER FOR HOUSING INC
EVENT DATE: Aug 24, 2013
I have been selected to participate in a short-term mission trip in Kerala, India from August 24 – August 31, 2013. I began doing these mission trips in 2010 and have grown to love the experience. The Fuller Center for Housing is a non-profit ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing worldwide. In 2005, The Fuller Center for Housing was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller, co-founders of Habitat for Humanity, with the mission to be a Christ-centered, faith-driven organization witnessing the love of God by providing opportunities for families to have a simple, decent place to live. The Fuller Center has a domestic and international presence and sends teams all over the world to help build houses in partnership with people in need.
My team is currently raising funds for the India affiliate, and then on August 24, 2013, we will go to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala to help families build their homes. Kerala is located on the southwestern coast of India and is where poverty and paradise collide. Despite all its exotic beauty, the state of Kerala has its share of shacks and slums like the rest of India, where nearly 170 million people live in slum conditions, roughly 17 percent of the world's slum-dwellers.
As part of the partnership agreement, each family -with the help of volunteers like my team- spends hundreds of hours building their home through what is referred to as “sweat equity” and once the house is ready, they move in and begin paying for it through a no-interest loan from The Fuller Center. These mortgage payments are then used to help finance houses for other families.
These trips are a labor of love; however, there is a financial piece involved. That is why I am asking for your help. I am paying my own airfare and expenses for the trip (approximately $2,000) but my team needs to raise an additional $1,100 per person by June 30, 2013, which covers a donation to the local affiliate for continued work in the area and lodging, clean water, food and insurance for the volunteers. Please consider making a 100% tax-deductible donation to benefit The Trivandrum Fuller Center. Kerala is the most literate and socially developed state in India; however, it has an extremely high unemployment rate of 26 percent. The Trivandrum Fuller Center was formed in the fall of 2007 and has helped 8 families thus far with plans to continue working as long as there is a need.
You can donate using a credit card by calling The Fuller Center’s Global Builders staff at (229) 924-2900. So that my team gets credited, you will need to provide my trip number (45002).
If you prefer to write a check, make it payable to The Fuller Center for Housing, and send it to them directly to Fuller Center for Housing, P.O. Box 523, Americus, GA 31709. You will receive a letter acknowledging your donation.
I hope you will invest in my team and those in Kerala, India who are in need of a simple, decent place to live and a renewed chance at life. Any amount is appreciated to help my team and support The Fuller Center’s work in India. All donations are 100% tax deductible and you will receive a receipt for your donation.
Following the trip I will write all contributors updating them about the trip, what we accomplished and how the donations were put to good use. You can also follow my journey on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.
