I first met Kerri two years ago when my daughter was in Kerri's third grade class. Throughout that year I couldn't help but admire her level of dedication to teaching, and how much she cared about her students and their learning. She bought necessary items for the classroom & for the students as well with her own money like backpacks, paper, shoes. She tutored a student in her class who was very sick for most of the year, sometimes driving an hour away to the hospital. She went above and beyond on a daily basis. At the end of my daughter's year with her I was concerned about her math comprehension, and Kerri offered to come over and help her (because that's the kind of teacher she was). When she came over, she and I could not stop talking, and that began our friendship. We became good friends, as well as our daughters.
Three weeks ago Kerri was walking and was hit by a car and killed. I am still struggling to figure out how something like this happens to such a good person. What I do know is that someone like this should never be forgotten. Kerri ran her first 5K three weeks before the accident, and with Thanksgiving around the corner I feel it is the perfect time to express how thankful I am to have had her as a friend for only a short time. I truly feel I am a better person for having known her. And so, despite being short notice, I would like to raise money in her honor walking in the Newport, RI Pie Run on Thanksgiving morning for a charity I feel she would love, DonorsChoose.org. They help students in need by providing funds for classroom projects posted by school teachers. Please help me honor a phenomenal teacher and friend in keeping her memory alive!
This picture is Kerri right after finishing her 5K with her daughter Liren. Liren's sign says 'GO MOM!" (I know the picture quality isn't great...)
