What is FXS or Fragile X Syndrome? Fragile X is a genetic condition and the leading inherited cause of intellectual disability worldwide. Most males and females with FXS will experience some level of mild to moderate intellectual disability. Individuals with FXS may also have anxiety, hyperactive behavior, and attention deficit disorder. Fragile X is also the most common known genetic cause of autism or autism spectrum disorders, which can cause learning and behavioral challenges ranging from mild to severe in approximately one-third of individuals diagnosed with Fragile X.
You may have never heard of Fragile X…but it is very likely that a friend, family member, employee, coworker or neighbor is impacted. As many as 1 in 130 women are carriers of an expanded Fragile X gene, resulting in a 50% chance of having a child with FXS. As many as 1 in 3,600 males and 1 in 4,000 females are born with Fragile X Syndrome. FXS is an under recognized and under diagnosed contributor to intellectual disabilities all over the world. Over 1,000,000 individuals nationwide have, or are at risk, of developing a Fragile X disorder.
Join us for a special meet & greet this year at the Hike for Hope 2014.
Families and Friends are encouraged to attend Fragile X Connections, which will be held Saturday, June 14, 2014 from 12:00pm—1:00pm at Badger Mountain park during the Fragile X Hike for Hope.
