Organized by: Auburn Hernandez
About the founder:
Hello! My name is Auburn Hernandez. I am a 22 year old woman, born and raised in Austin, TX. As a young girl I've always dreamt of being a teacher, counselor, public speaker, and writer. At the age of 18 I moved to Baker, Louisiana to complete an internship. During my time there I had the privilege of mentoring over 100 girls weekly. I discovered a deep desire to help young woman overcome their daily struggles. The more I heard their individual stories the more my heart ached. I knew at that moment I needed to take action.
What will we call our organization?
“Keys to my life”
I first came up with the name “My life” in high school only then to realize that name was copyrighted. Nevertheless, mom came up with
“Keys” which is something that affords a means of access: the key to happiness. OR something that secures or controls entrance to a place.
It made perfect sense.
Keys to my life: Everyone wants to access a happy, successful life. Sometimes we don’t have the “Keys” to every door. So, with the help from others we can then access that particular door to success.
It’s very obvious
Society portrays women negatively due to beauty, body image, and sexual objectification.
Woman began to feel inadequate, because they feel the need to reach the standards of media all around the world. Statistics show that 90% of women actually feel that they need to change something about their physical appearance.
As quoted by Philippe Harousseau
“The existing narrow definition of beauty is not only unrealistic and unattainable, but clearly it also creates hang-ups that can lead girls to question their own beauty. It’s time to free the next generation from these stereotypes and give girls the tools they need to discover their own definition of beauty.”
If we can decrease the number of pregnant teens, stop bulling, poverty, prostitution and raise young girls up to have proper ethics; while teaching them proper etiquette all at the same time we’ve then made a difference in our generation.
Our essential goal is to take a holistic approach. We don’t want to just focus one aspect. We also want to empower every part of a woman’s life.
It will look like this. We will travel to many schools in our local area, sending motivational speakers and inspiring women to send a message of hope to these girls. Encouraging them to let go of the stereotypes and live out their dreams.
We will hold afterschool/summer programs for the girls such as Health & fitness classes, Cooking/cleaning classes, Teen Pregnancy awareness, Anti-Trafficking awareness, Anti drug awareness, Fashion classes, Marketing and business classes and much more!
There are a lot of logistics in starting a non-profit organization, but essentially without the proper funds we are very limited with what we can do. It’s very simple; we need your help to make this possible.
